Eighteen months ago, while recovering from major back
surgery, Susan Leffler transitioned from an avid runner to a dedicated walker and
hasn't looked back. "I had no idea I
would like it. I love it!" she exclaims.
When Sue steps outside, she finds an inherent beauty in winter weather and
needs little else to keep her motivated to exercise. "The weather is never as bad as it looks and
I just love the winter landscape." comments the youthful grandmother of three. On her days off from working as an Oncology Nurse
at Ball Memorial Hospital, Sue logs 7-8 miles along the White River, through
Minnetrista Cultural Center and on the Cardinal Greenway. On work days, Sue shortens her distance and
walks through her neighborhood. "Always log your miles." suggests Sue who
averages 30 miles a week. She finds this
practice, a holdover from her running days, helps her schedule walking time
into her work week.
Proper dress is essential for anyone exercising outdoors in
winter weather. "Invest in the right
clothes." advises Sue who wears two pairs each of socks, gloves and running
tights , a turtle neck, ski hat and her favorite bike jacket if the weather is
20 degrees or below. "I wear YakTrax walkers
when it's icy. They act as studded snow
tires for my shoes." says Sue. Stressing
the importance of being safe and aware of her surroundings, Sue never uses an
iPod while walking. Instead she listens
for traffic, the sound of crunching snow and her own breathing as she absorbs
the winter landscape.
Staying motivated isn't an issue for Sue. Feeling better, sleeping better and being
outdoors keeps her going regardless of the weather.
