Thanksgiving Day Event 
The anticipation of huge turkey dinners and non-stop football viewing inspired some folks to begin their 2009 Thanksgiving holiday with a run or walk on the Cardinal Greenway. An estimated crowd of 250 individuals braved the chilly early morning temperatures on November 26 for a preemptive Turkey Trot calorie burn. Participants could choose a marked distance from one to six miles heading north or south on the Greenway ending at the Depot for water, coffee and some healthy snacks.
 Two and four legged walkers/runners huddled outside the Depot as Angie Pool, Acting Executive Director for the Cardinal Greenway sounded the air horn for the 8:00 start. The crowd quickly merged onto the Greenway in both directions walking and running with friends and family members. 
Serious runners broke away early from the pack leaving the casual athletes plenty of room to walk shoulder to shoulder and discuss holiday shopping plans. Parents and grandparents hiked behind enthusiastic youngsters who proudly announced each half mile marker they encountered. Some walked or jogged beside their canine companions as they turned at the mile markers and headed towards the finish.
After the workout, participants refueled with cookies, fruit, coffee and water inside the Depot. Even the dogs were treated to a biscuit snack for their efforts. Gradually, individuals rejoined their groups and headed home to enjoy their Thanksgiving holiday knowing they could enjoy today's dessert with a little less guilt.
This was the sixth year for the annual Cardinal Greenway Turkey Trot. All proceeds from the event support Greenway maintenance. Food collected at registration is donated to Christian Ministries in Delaware County to feed others in need.
