Letter From the Director
Dear Trail Enthusiasts:The year 2009 was one of transition. We were fortunate in that we received multiple grants and monies from the federal government to build more of our trail. We transitioned in to becoming our own construction company to better manage the 6 new projects and dollars granted to them. These projects included building trail in Grant County, repairing bridges and building trail in Wayne County and managing the construction for new miles to the White River Greenway including a new bridge.
The excitement was everywhere as these new construction projects started. We also put plans in place to hold our first walking event along the trail. For this walk it was decided we would honor a community leader who truly gives back. The choice was obvious as we chose our own Executive Director of the time, Lenette Freeman. Lenette was her usual modest self, but agreed to let us "use her to the Greenways advantage". The walk was successful as were our other Greenway events and all continued to bring new trail users to the trail.
In the fall of 2009 Lenette passed away after a long courageous battle with cancer. She was and continues to be an inspiration to all of us at Cardinal Greenway.
Our volunteers continued to help the Greenway be successful. From the Board of Directors to the Rangers and Maintenance Team they make us what we are today – a premier trail. In 2009 over 300 volunteers provided over 4,000 hours of service. Our annual volunteer dinner is just one way we say Thank You! "Your dedication and passion for our organization inspires us daily."
With the construction projects just beginning, we look forward with great anticipation to 2010 and 2011. These years will no doubt go down in Greenway history as the most exciting and the most challenging ever!
With heartfelt appreciation to all,
Angie Pool
